The Westall UFO Incident

The Westall UFO Incident is one of those strange stories that sounds almost too simple at first. A group of school children in Melbourne looked up at the sky and saw something they could not explain. It happened in broad daylight on April 6, 1966, near Westall High School. What followed became one of Australia’s most talked about UFO stories.

It was a normal school day in the south-eastern part of Melbourne. Students were outside on the school oval. Some were playing while others were getting ready for their next class.

Then people started looking at the sky.

Several students reported seeing a strange object moving above the school. Some described it as a silver or grey disc. Others said it looked like a flying saucer. The object seemed to move very quickly and change direction in ways that the witnesses found difficult to understand.

At first, not everyone took it seriously.

Former student Terry Peck later recalled seeing a strange object floating close to the ground. She said it appeared unusually large before suddenly shooting upward at an incredible speed.

This is one reason the Westall UFO incident became so interesting. It was not just one person standing alone in a field. Many students and teachers were looking at the sky at roughly the same time.

The exact number of witnesses is still difficult to establish. Researchers who have spoken to former students have collected many different accounts. Shane Ryan, who has researched the case for years, has spoken with more than 140 people who said they saw the object or objects, according to ABC.

The descriptions were not exactly the same.

Some people said they saw one object. Others remembered two or three. Some described a large circular object. Others remembered something shaped more like a disc with a dome.

That difference does not necessarily make the story less interesting. People were standing in different parts of the school grounds, so they were not all looking from the same position.

One of the most talked-about parts of the story happened after the object appeared to move toward an area known as the Grange.

Some students climbed over the school fence and ran after it.

One former student, Terry Peck, later said she saw a strange object hovering close to the ground. She described it as large and said it suddenly rose into the air at very high speed.

Other witnesses said the object had left a strange mark in the grass.

The story gets even stranger from this point.

Some witnesses remember seeing military-looking men near the area shortly afterward. There have also been claims that people in uniform arrived and inspected the ground.

This has led to one of the biggest questions surrounding the Westall UFO mystery.

What were those people doing there?

There is no confirmed evidence that a military operation was responsible for the sighting. However, some witnesses have continued to remember a military presence that day. ABC’s investigation also found that several witnesses described men arriving near the school after the sighting.

The school itself also became part of the mystery.

According to former students, the principal later told the children that what they had seen was probably a weather balloon. They were also told not to talk about the event.

For some people, that made the story even more suspicious.

For others, there may have been a simple reason. A school principal might have wanted to stop hundreds of students from becoming involved in a strange UFO story and attracting media attention.

That explanation has also been mentioned by people who knew the school at the time. So the silence around the event does not automatically prove that there was a cover-up.

There were also newspaper reports about the sighting.

Some students spoke to reporters on the day. A television crew reportedly arrived at the school, and students described what they had seen.

Over the years, however, the story slowly disappeared from public attention.

That changed decades later.

Researchers began contacting former students and teachers. Old newspaper reports were examined. People who had been children in 1966 started talking about the event again.

One of the interesting things about the Westall UFO incident is that many witnesses still remember the basic event in a similar way. They remember strange objects in the sky, unusual movement, and a large group of students watching them.

But there is still no agreed explanation.

One theory says that the object may have been a weather balloon.

This is not as strange as it sounds. Weather balloons were commonly used at the time. A balloon moving through the sky could look very unusual from the ground, especially to children who had never seen one before.

There was also a high-altitude balloon project known as HIBAL. The project involved large silver balloons launched from Mildura. Some researchers have suggested that a balloon from this program could have been connected to the sighting.

However, the connection has not been proven. One former member of the HIBAL team interviewed by ABC said he had no knowledge of a balloon coming down near Melbourne that day.

Other ideas involve military aircraft or secret technology.

The 1960s were a very different time. The Cold War was happening, and Australia was involved in various military and scientific projects.

Some researchers have suggested that the object could have been connected to a secret military project.

Again, there is no solid public evidence that proves this.

There is also another possibility.

Maybe the witnesses simply saw something ordinary that looked unusual from the ground.

That could explain some parts of the story. But it does not easily explain why so many people remembered the event for decades.

And that is probably why the story has survived.

The Westall UFO incident is not a story with a clear ending. There is no confirmed alien spacecraft. There is no official explanation that has satisfied everyone. There are witness accounts, old newspaper reports, theories and memories.

The strangest part may be that the event happened in the middle of an ordinary school day.

There was no dark forest.

No abandoned building.

No storm.

Just a school oval, a clear sky, and hundreds of people looking upward.

Even after sixty years, former students are still talking about what they saw. Some are convinced it was something unusual. Others are more open to ordinary explanations.

For me, that uncertainty is what makes the Westall UFO story worth remembering.

We know something unusual was reported over a Melbourne school in 1966. We know many people saw something in the sky. We know there were different explanations even at the time.

What we still do not know is what the object actually was.

And after all these years, that question remains the most interesting part of the story.
